And, she won!
Josh and I have known for several weeks, but she just found out a few days ago. I'm including her essay here for your viewing pleasure. ;-) She worked for several weeks on it. The given topic was "Are You Proud of Your Country?". The essay had to be between 300-400 words, her own words, but an adult could check grammar and spelling.
Are you proud of your country?
I'm very proud of my country. There are many reasons why.
America gives us freedom to make choices. We have the freedom to choose our leaders through voting. We can choose where we live and where we go to school. We can choose our job and our friends. We can also choose to go, or not to go, to church. Everyday we make thousands of choices, though the consequences of our choices could be bad and they could be good,. This all comes down to agency. Agency is the freedom, or ability, to make a choice. By making that choice we must accept the consequences of our actions whether good or bad . Agency is what makes free. Without agency we couldn't make choices. I'm proud of the freedom in America.
I'm proud of many things in America, but most of all I am proud of the men and women who are willing to fight for our country. Many people have died fighting for us. These soldiers often choose to fight for our country because they value freedom. I am proud of those who volunteer their time, and sacrifice so much for our country. In the past, Americans have fought for what they believe in. During Colonial Times when England was forcing more and more taxes on the American Colonists, England put a tax on tea, and the Americans didn't like that. To express their point, American patriots snuck onto a ship carrying tea, and dumped the tea overboard. Later on in history, American Colonists declared independence from England and then fought the Revolutionary War for the right to govern themselves.
America gives people freedom to invent, and do things they want to. One inventor I like is Alexander Graham Bell, who invented the telephone. Public libraries are another reason to be proud of America. I love libraries because they provide educational books which help me to learn about lots of things including information about different cultures, American History, and science. In the late 1800s, near the end of his life, Andrew Carnegie used his wealth in many ways, one of which was to help establish public libraries in small towns. I'm proud of such generous citizens in America.
Because of the freedom and the people here, America is a great place to live.
