Josh and I enjoyed a special treat this weekend. Dinner at a newer Italian restaurant, La Briciola, in San Francisco, followed by a showing of Les Miserables at the Orpheum Theater.
If you're ever in SF looking for a special place to eat that's not TOO out of budget, I highly recommend this place. I don't know how authentic it is, since I've never been to Italy, but the food tasted super good and we were not disappointed. It was not your standard pasta feed (hello, olive garden). We took Josh's parents with us, and had a grand evening.
We left our kids in Ukiah to fend for themselves. Seriously, life is SO different with two good babysitters. It's like, you put in your time and then you get to reap some of the rewards before they leave home.
Even though we didn't even get home until 1:30am (thanks to Josh who did ALL the driving!!), we managed to work up enough energy to work in our yard for a couple hours this afternoon. The poor yard has been neglected over the past few years for many reasons, one of which was a lack of proper tools. Our previous week whacker/trimmer had broken and we've just now finally gotten around to replacing it. Does anyone else have a hard time keeping up with their yard? I am seriously thinking maybe I'm more cut out for apartment living? Managed communities? Fake grass? Actually, we looked at some at Home Depot today and it did not look too bad (just expensive to install initially). I was tempted. Too bad I don't have the $$$ for something like that. ;-)
I think I've mentioned in the past that one of the fun things about living here is the annual Mendocino Music Festival. It's world class entertainment like what you'd find at venues in major cities, brought to our door. There are four LDS musicians playing in the orchestra this year. Several of them have been here year after year after year, giving us a chance to form friendships that we treasure. (Hez: one of those LDS musicians is the lead horn for the SF orchestra, and has played in venues around the world (notably on Broadway for Les Mis!) - he plays French Horn!!) Josh had them over for dinner on Thursday (I had to skip out early for a meeting) and he informed me later that I missed a piano sight-reading contest, which sounded totally fun. I keep forgetting to drag the kids down for the music festival rehearsals, which are free to listen to, but it's on the docket for this week. Bwa-ha-ha-ha...I'm going to expose my kids to culture!
The two older girls are taking an art class given by a woman in our ward who, in her past life, was an elementary school art teacher. They are loving their art time.
Our friends are still staying with us. Right now it looks like the latest they will be here is September, when a house is scheduled to open for them (although I think Nicole's hoping it happens sooner - this hasn't been any easier on her than it's been on us, but she's the one living in limbo!).
I think I've mentioned to a few people that we were looking at buying a house. We've decided not to pursue that particular arrangement and will continue to stay where we are. I guess unless some amazing deal presents itself.
