Summer's Coming

Finally. Well, maybe not. Today we are in Ukiah and it is only 100 degrees. That is a shocking contrast to Fort Bragg and the kids have been a little whiny about the heat. But I like warming up and drying off (get that mildew off our bodies!). I am grateful I just get it in small doses...I think we're going to die in Idaho.

What did we do this week? Monday was art day. The kids did still life drawing outdoors. It's one of their favorite activities...and it was nice enough to go outside for it! Hannah's been working on her math like crazy. Logan, too. Brynne has been reading like a mad woman (all my children have been slightly looney this week, it would appear). She's really getting to be a fast reader.
We are reading a fascinating book called "Paddle to the Sea" by Holling C. Holling. It's a story of a wooden Indian in a canoe that is carved by a young Indian boy and left where it will catch a creek to Lake Superior. The boy hopes that it will "paddle to the sea" and that is the name he gives his wooden canoe. The book is a chronicle of the canoe's journey. There's a map in the back that shows the entire journey. Each chapter is one page of writing with a really nice drawing on the opposite page. The kids have been learning so much about lakes, rivers, currents, marshes, sawmills, mining, docks, and other life along the lake things. We're all enjoying it.

Our other real-aloud is a book called "Thimble Summer" by Elizabeth Enright. This was a Newberry Award winner in 1939 (I think that's the date). What a throwback to another world...where children could safely walk along the highway and hitchhike to town! It's been fun to learn about the time period.
