This might be a minor problem. We don't know yet.
This morning I was making breakfast (berry muffins, yum!) and Brynne and I decided that a smoothie would be the perfect complement to the meal. Last time I made smoothies we just blended milk and frozen strawberries with a little sugar. Today I decided to do the orange julius version so I sent Brynne down to the garage to pull some orange juice from the other freezer. She came hurrying back asking, "Mom, is there supposed to be water on the garage floor?"
Ack!
I looked, and I could hear the distinct quick drip of water coming from under the platform that holds our hot water heater/furnace (it's a weird system).
Lucky to have a husband who runs his own schedule, he made the phone calls to the landlord and plumber and then stuck around waiting for the guy to show up (which was within 15 minutes!). The plumber turned off the water for us and said that he could fix it tomorrow. This water heater is also what heats our house. Which means that today we have no hot water and no hot air coming up through our vents. Luckily, it's not a tremendously cold day and the heater had already warmed the house up for the morning.
Call me crazy, but I'm so grateful to be renting today! We are registering our new van today and that is going to cost plenty - I don't want these costs added on top of it! Although, it could just be this particular house.
Before we moved to Fort Bragg, one of Sarah's co-workers, who had grown up in Fort Bragg, passed along some advice. She said, "don't buy a house built by ***** because he builds crappy houses". Well, as it turns out, this house we are renting was owned by ***** and remodeled by him. I have no idea how old the original structure is. I do know that there are things that weren't done very well. There are some nice things, too. It's made me think about the sorts of questions I would ask before purchasing a house in order to get as much information as possible!
Hopefully, we can have our hot water back tomorrow. :-)
