Josh and I bought about half a pig from some girls in our ward. They raise them and sell them. Someone in our ward asked if we'd go in on it with them. We said we'd think about it. Two days later they showed up with a cooler full of freshly butchered meat for us...so I guess that made up our minds for us! I couldn't believe that they butchered it themselves. What skills! We used our first bit of pork yesterday. Josh and I put a roast in the dutch oven and slowcooked it in the oven all day, then made homemade Carolina BBQ sauce and had pulled-pork sandwiches for dinner. It was fantastic. The meat was so juicy and tender. Josh has been reading through a book on curing/smoking meat so that we can get the bacon and stuff ready to use. I'm feeling so....Little House on the Prairie these days.
Just wait until Jenny and I buy our beef. I'll be rolling in meat. I could take a meat bath every day this winter! Or something.
